Once upon a time, Las Vegas was a Wrestling town. From the AWA and NWA running in the 70s and 80s, to G.L.O.W. and much more, Vegas had always been a town where Wrestling was over.
But lately, Vegas in it’s newest incarnation as a destination for Foodies (See my ‘Food and Loafing’ Series in Food Fight) and Broadway type shows , Wrestling has taken a seat in the back of the auditorium. The “Big Boys” rarely come here – in fact, TNA has just once and the WWE does MAYBE a house show. The only exception is the RAW coming here August 24th – the first TV done by the WWE here in over 3 years. Even worse, the Indy scene here is almost non-existent, with the last advertised show being held in a SWAP MEET of all places.
It can’t be that Vegas has lost it’s taste for Wrestling. Until recently, Wrestling was under the same jurisdiction as Boxing, and that regulation harmed business. Now though, it’s out from under that umbrella – so you’d think some well heeled Promoter would be jumping to add Vegas to it’s “territory” list.
And it’s not like Vegas can’t draw. The Orleans has hosted some Lucha Libre action with AAA, which packs in a nearly full house – and not cheap either. VIP seats were $75, which is easily within the price point the WWE looks for, and these DID sell out.
So if Wrestling can sell, and there are fans here – why is this city being overlooked?
My personal opinion is that people have taken the new Vegas image far too seriously. With Foodies and those wanting “Refined” entertainment being in full effect, the Wrestling world seems to be thinking that their product isn’t desired. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve spoken to quite a few people recently who are literally STARVED for some action – so much so that they have been travelling to places like Reno and Phoenix where they CAN attend shows.
So like I said to those in North Carolina – WAKE UP, Las Vegas – and all those who would run here. The time and audience is ripe, so DO something about it and bring Vegas back into the fold.
